- 1. Canada is too big for its population

Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia – it is very big, in fact Canada is bigger than the European Union combined. But Canada’s population is only at 38 million people which means it is sparsely populated especially towards the North. Canada is sometimes classified as a “subcontinent”.
- 2. Very easy for a foreign power to invade

Because of its massive size, if the United States or Russia wanted to invade Canada, it would be easy them. Although, we must point out that in the 1800’s the US tried to invade Canada and failed. But it would be a very different story this time around if the US wanted to invade.
- 3. Many foreigners think the capital city of Canada is Toronto.

The capital city of Canada is Ottawa. When many foreigners think of Canada, the first image that appears in their minds is Toronto. Toronto is the largest city and the economic engine of Canada, but it is NOT the capital city of Canada. That honor belongs to Ottawa – this is where the federal government is located, embassies, etc.
- 4. Canada is too cold in the winter

The cold is not really embarrassing, but some people abroad think Canadians live in houses made of ice (igloos). But with that said, other than the province of British Columbia, Canadian winters are very cold, especially with the windchill. Canada’s capital city – Ottawa is the second coldest capital city in the world.

The biggest cities and major cities in Canada are: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa. There is a big drop off after these cities.
- 6. Western Canada does not care about French

On paper, the official languages of Canada are both English and French, but in reality, most French speakers live in Eastern Canada.
- 7. No seat at the UN Security Council

The UN Security Council has 5 permanent members (China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and 10 non-permanent members. Canada is a rich and powerful country in the international community, but it has never held a seat at the UN’s security council. To date, Canada has been denied a seat at the UN’s prestigious “Security Council” 2 times.
- 8. Milk is sold in plastic bags

You can find Carton box milk as well, but the majority of milk comes in plastic bags. I have been to many countries and I have yet to see this anywhere else.
- 9. No official flag for a very long time

Canada officially got its flag in 1965, over 100 years after becoming an independent nation. I don’t know about you but this is definitely weird!
